Sonatine is a French publishing house created in 2008 and part of the publishing group Editis since 2014. From its birthyear, its catalog took a stand in the renaissance of the thriller and “noir” novel genre in France, exploring its broad range through the publishing of novels, graphic novels, true crime books, essays and biographies. Sonatine publishes mainly translations. Sonatine’s dedicated and passionate team is committed in taking care of the whole publishing and promoting process (we do not use agencies to create our content), as well as discovering pioneer and never-before published authors, and making them blossom on the French market. Writers such as Paula Hawkins, David Joy, Celeste Ng and Stuart Turton have become fully part of the Sonatine family. Over the past 15 years, Sonatine’s history has been marked by the publishing of successful books, such as “By Reasons of Insanity” by Shane Stevens, “A Quiet Belief in Angels” by R. J. Ellory, “The Religion” by Tim Willocks, “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn, “The Fact of a Body” by Alex Marzano-Lesnievich and “The Hunting Accident”, a graphic novel written by David Carlson and Landis Blair that won the “Fauve d’or” - the highest recognition prize in France rewarding a comic strip. Sonatine has also published illustrated books on cinema, including conversations with Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese, Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton.
Its tailor-made production and promotion strategy has helped build Sonatine the reputation of a bestseller-maker publisher, now well-known and trusted by booksellers.”
After a MA in English literature Marie started teaching French but she soon realized that teaching was not her passion; and as she has always been a devoted reader, she started to work as a bookseller.
In 2005, she moved into the publishing world as an assistant editor at le Cherche Midi, where she is still in charge of the foreign literature. She has been working at Sonatine since its creation. Right from the start, she proved to be a formidable rights hunter, able to track down authors who had been forgotten for years. She is now co-publishing director of the company with Arnaud Hofmarcher. After deciding to come to live in Spain, a few years ago, she learnt the language and is now looking for new authors to expand her lists in both companies.
