The University of Guadalajara, through a project created by the Environmental Sciences Museum as part of the University’s Cultural Center, and with the support of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, has established the José Emilio Pacheco City and Nature Award. The prize, which will be given for the first time this year, will be dedicated to poetry. The winning author, who must write in Spanish and have at least ten unpublished poems or poems published in the last five years that are related to nature, urban sustainability, socio-ecological harmony and environmental conservation, will be given a purse of US $10,000. The award is dedicated to poet José Emilio Pacheco, whose work explores the duality between cities and nature.

Created by the University of Guadalajara, and with the collaboration of the National Institute for Indigenous Languages, the Culture Ministry, the National Commission for the Development of the Indigenous Cultures and Jalisco’s Department of Education, the American Indigenous Literature Award is granted to enrich, protect and promote the legacy and richness of Mexico’s indigenous peoples through literature in all its forms, and to and acknowledge and further develop the careers and works of indigenous authors. The award, which carries a purse of US $25,000, will be given for the fourth time at the 2016 FIL Guadalajara.

The SM Ibero-American Award for Literature for Children and Young People was implemented in 2005, the year of Ibero-American literature, with the goal of promoting literature for children and young people throughout Ibero-America. The award is given out each year during the Guadalajara International Book Fair to recognize writers of literature for children and young people and carries a purse of US $30,000.

With the goal of creating a network that helps to encourage the work of illustrators of books for children and young people in Ibero-America, the SM Foundation and the FIL Guadalajara invites illustrators to submit their work to be included in the Annual Ibero-American Illustration Catalog. The 45 works selected will be displayed in an exposition at the Guadalajara International Book Fair. In addition, illustrators will have the opportunity to work on an illustrated book with Ediciones SM and the winner will be given US $5,000. The opening of a bookstore always creates an initial impact: “A bookstore has opened!” And regardless of its size, square footage, number of employees, or titles, something happens. This panel will showcase a variety of practices and initiatives in which a bookstore sparks processes that can change lives.
Participants: Àurea Perelló, Rodnei Casares, Carmen Lucía Alvarado
Moderator: Verónica Mendoza

Àurea Perelló
She holds a degree in Art History and a postgraduate degree in Philosophy and Aesthetics of Contemporary Art. She began working in bookstores during her university years at the Proa Bookstore in the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, an experience that later became her vocation. As an art historian, she has worked as an independent curator in several civic centers in Barcelona and for the Barcelona City Council. Since 2005, she has worked in various bookstores and book-related projects, including Alibri, Bertrand, Casa del Libro, Gremi de Llibreters de Catalunya, Nórdica Libros, and Libelista. She is one of the founding members of the Finestres project and, for the past five years, has served as director of its two Barcelona locations and a third in Palamós, Costa Brava. She is convinced that bookstores are the best spaces to let time pass, to get lost among books, and that they are indispensable in any city that wants to remain vibrant.

Rodnei Casares
Born in Caracas, he is a bookseller, editor, and cultural manager. He started working in a bookstore at the age of 21, almost by chance, and since then has developed a deep passion for the profession. He is co-founder, together with Alberto Sáez, of Libros del Fuego, an independent publishing house originating in Venezuela with a presence in Colombia.
He has promoted projects that strengthen Medellín’s book ecosystem, such as the city’s Bookstore Map, the Bookstore Tour, and the first Antioquia Booksellers School, carried out in collaboration with Marcela Fernández. For several years, he has also directed a bookstore in Medellín that functions as a space for conversation and community. For him, the role of the bookseller is to listen and recommend, to build a bridge between books and readers, and to keep the bookstore alive as a vibrant space in the city.

Carmen Lucía Alvarado

Her poems have been included in anthologies and magazines in several countries, in both English and Spanish. In 2020, she was nominated for the Rhysling Award, granted annually by the Science Fiction Poetry Association in the United States. She has published the poetry books Imagen y semejanza (2010), Poetas astronautas (2012), and Edad geológica del miedo (2018), while her books Pangea Muerte and Los seres intermedios are forthcoming.
