Biography


Mia Couto is a central figure in Portuguese-language literature. He has successfully combined his background in biology with his literary talent to explore themes such as identity, memory, and cultural hybridity. Author of novels such as Sleepwalking Land and The Last Flight of the Flamingo, and short-story collections such as Voices Made Night, he is the most widely translated Mozambican writer, with works published in more than 27 languages. His career has been recognized with major awards, including the Camões Prize (2013). His style, marked by animist realism and the use of Mozambican lexicon, has renewed African narrative in Portuguese.
