Biography

Claudio Magris comes from the tradition of uniting narration and reflection in literature. In this way, he has developed a solid academic career, has written many essays, and has participated in politics in his country, Italy. However, his greatest interest has always been the condition of human existence. In his work he addresses themes such as totalitarianism, identity, violence, fascism, utopia, and disillusionment. Notable are his novels El Danubio, Otro mar, and Microcosmos, as well as his essay books El anillo de Clarisse and Utopía y desencanto. He has translated writers such as Ibsen, Kleist, and Schnitzler. He is currently a professor at the University of Trieste. He has received numerous
