Biography

Born in Medellín in 1942 and naturalized Mexican in 2007, where he lives since 1971, Fernando Vallejo is the author of the novels Los días azules, El fuego secreto, Los caminos a Roma, Años de indulgencia, Entre fantasmas, La virgen de los sicarios, El desbarrancadero (with which he won the Rómulo Gallegos Prize), La rambla paralela, Mi hermano el alcalde, and El don de la vida. In addition, he has published three books of essays in which, with humor and erudition, he lashes out, respectively, against Charles Darwin, the “impostors” of science, and the Catholic Church: La tautología darwinista, Manualito de imposturología física, and La puta de Babilonia. Fernando Vallejo has also ventured into filmmaking as a director and screenwriter. He directed the films Crónica roja, which in 1979 received the Ariel Award from the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences for Best First Feature, En la tormenta, and Barrio de campeones. He also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of his novel La virgen de los sicarios, which premiered in 2000 directed by the French director Barbet Schroeder.
