After studying medicine, Lobo Antunes served in the Portuguese army during the Angola war. His life experience during that period marked his destiny and his career. He is considered by many critics around the world to be one of the most important living writers, and also one of the strongest candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In Lobo Antunes’s work, notable titles include Memoria de elefante, his first novel from 1979, La muerte de Carlos Gardel (1994), Manual de inquisidores (1996), Esplendor de Portugal (1997), and the novel that earned him the Grand Prize for the Novel from the Portuguese Writers’ Association in 1999, Exhortación a los cocodrilos. Lobo Antunes has also received the Rosalía de Castro Prize from the Galician PEN Club, the Austrian State Prize for European Literature, and, in 2003, the Latin Union Prize for Writers.
