Biography

Born in Brazil in 1925, Fonseca is considered one of the great contemporary Latin American authors. His work is characterized by a peculiar crime-fiction style that portrays the violence of streets and urban police stations and “has contributed decisively to the renewal of narrative prose, as it introduces a way of telling that takes advantage of and reworks forms coming from popular literature, such as noir fiction, but also those of political, social, existential, and erotic novels,” as the prize jury stated. The humanization of violence and the profound human portraits that derive from it are constant elements in the Brazilian’s work, as is his critique of society and power from the perspective of everyday life.
