His trajectory as an anthologist began in 1948 with Diez poetas cubanos and was consolidated in 1952 with Cincuenta años de poesÃa cubana. In narrative he wrote the novel cycle De Peña Pobre (1980); as a critic and essayist he has an extensive bibliography that includes CrÃtica sucesiva (1971), La crÃtica literaria y estética del siglo XIX cubano, in three volumes, Ese sol del mundo moral (1975), and Resistencia y libertad (2000).
