Biography

Poet, writer, essayist, and thinker of Cuban roots, he was one of the great voices of contemporary Latin American poetry. Along with José Lezama Lima, Eliseo Diego, Octavio Smith, Julián Orbón, Cleva Solís, and Fina García Marruz, he formed the Orígenes Group. At 17 he published his first poetry book, a genre he did not abandon until his death. His trajectory as an anthologist began in 1948 with Diez poetas cubanos and was consolidated in 1952 with Cincuenta años de poesía cubana. In narrative he wrote the novel cycle De Peña Pobre (1980); as a critic and essayist he has an extensive bibliography that includes Crítica sucesiva (1971), La crítica literaria y estética del siglo XIX cubano, in three volumes, Ese sol del mundo moral (1975), and Resistencia y libertad (2000).
