Mexico, 1933-2018

He was born in 1933 in the city of Puebla, Mexico. From 1958 to mid-1961, he worked at the publishing houses Novaro and Joaquín Mortiz; in July of that same year, until the end of 1988, his life took place abroad, except for brief periods spent in Mexico. In 1968 he was appointed Cultural Attaché at the Mexican Embassy in Belgrade and Warsaw; he was Cultural Counsellor in Paris, Budapest, and Moscow; and in 1983 he was appointed ambassador in Prague, a position he held for almost six years. Among the awards granted to him are the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize, Mexico, 1981; the Comala Prize, 1982; the Herralde Prize, 1985; the National Prize for Arts and Letters, 1994; and the Mazatlán Prize, 1996. Among his works stand out: El desfile del amor (1984), Domar a la divina Garza (1989), Vals de Mefisto (1984), Juegos florales (1990), Cuerpo presente (1990), La vida conyugal (1991), and El arte de la fuga (1996). His works have been translated into Polish, Hungarian, Russian, German, French, and Italian.
