Biography

He was born in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, in 1933. From a modest family, for many years he was a worker in a jewelry workshop, and also did work in journalism and film. In 1960 he was a finalist for the Biblioteca Breve Prize with his first novel Encerrados con un sólo juguete and, since he was still working in the jewelry workshop, he was labeled as the “worker writer.” He obtained mention and the Biblioteca Breve Prize in 1960 and 1965, respectively; the International Novel Prize, Mexico, 1973; the Planeta Prize in 1978; the Ateneo de Sevilla Prize in 1990; Spain’s National Critics’ Prize in 1993; the Europa Literature Prize in 1994; as well as the Cervantes Prize in 2008.
