Biography
Julio Ramón Ribeyro (Lima, 1929–1994) was a distinguished Peruvian writer and diplomat. His work, centered on urban settings and individual frustration, is characterized by a sober, ironic style close to expressionist realism. Among his most important books are Los gallinazos sin plumas, Cuentos de circunstancias, Los cautivos, and Sólo para fumadores, as well as several plays and texts without fixed genre definitions. He received the National Literature Prize and the National Culture Prize, and held diplomatic posts in Paris and at UNESCO.
