Biography
He was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1920 and died in Mexico City in 1994. Notable is his work as a translator of Virginia Woolf, Edgar Allan Poe, and R. L. Stevenson from English, and of Pushkin and other Russian poets. Among his poetic work stand out: En la calzada de Jesús del Monte (1949), Por los extraños pueblos (1958), Nombrar las cosas (1973), A través de mi espejo (1981), Los dÃas de tu vida, pero no los posteriores (1983), and Cuatro de oros (1991). He obtained, among others, the following awards: the Félix Varela Order, First Degree (Havana, 1986), the National Literature Prize (Havana, 1986), an Honorary Doctorate from the Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia, 1992), and the Jovellanos Prize of the Federation of Asturian Associations of Cuba (1992).
