India, Guest of Honor at the FIL Guadalajara in 2019
India’s participation as the Guadalajara International Book Fair’s guest of honor was officially announced today, participation that will include a broad sampling of the country’s culture and literature
India will be the Guest of Honor at the 2019 Guadalajara International Book Fair. The announcement was made today at a press conference held at the Indian embassy in Mexico, with headquarters in Mexico City. In attendance for the announcement were India’s ambassador in Mexico, Muktesh Pardeshi; counsellor and director of Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre, M.R.Qureshi; honorary consul, Xavier Orendain; president of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, Raúl Padilla López; and Marisol Schulz Manaut, director of FIL Guadalajara.
President of the FIL Guadalajara, Raúl Padilla López, highlighted the importance of India’s presence and participation in the FIL Guadalajara saying that, “The FIL is very proud and delighted that India has accepted our invitation to participate as our guest of honor next year,” adding that, “it will be the perfect occasion for a cultural meeting and to allow our publishing industries to form new ties and enrich one another.”
The Guadalajara International Book Fair is considered to be the largest event of its kind in the Spanish-speaking world, hosting over 20,000 book professionals from 47 countries each year. It also welcomes over 800 writers from across the globe, and over 814,000 visitors attended just last year. India has one of the most rich and diverse literary heritages in the world and has an important presence in the global publishing industry, releasing over 120,000 new books in 24 languages that are exported to 120 countries each year.
In addition to highlighting India’s cultural importance and its meeting with Mexico’s culture in 2019, the president of the FIL expressed that “strengthening the relationship between our industries is particularly exciting for us because we want the Fair to serve as a door to Mexico and Latin America for India’s literature, and vice versa.” He also reminded the audience that, thanks to Mexican writer Octavio Paz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and Mexico’s ambassador in India, that many Mexicans were familiar with the works of important Indian authors, “including short story writer Lokenath Bhattacharya, novelist Ruth Jhabvaka, and the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, writer with whom Paz shared the prestige of the Nobel Prize in Literature.”
India’s presence at the FIL 2019 will be coordinated by the National Book Trust of India (NBT). The organization participates regularly at international book fairs around the globe, participating as guest of honor in Frankfurt (2006), Moscow (2009), Beijing (2010) and Seoul (2013). The NBT organizes the New Delhi International Book Fair in January of each year, the largest event of its kind in Africa and Asia. Muktesh Pardeshi, India’s ambassador, said that “India’s participation as Guest of Honor at the FIL 2019 will reinforce the cultural, literary and social ties between the two ancient cultures.”
The 33rd annual FIL Guadalajara will be held from November 30 to December 8, 2019.
